Salem Summer Jaunt

 Salem Summer Jaunt

for the purpose of building a 'Catio'!

August 14-19

THURSDAY, August 14

Baker City to Salem via middle of state

355 miles

We leave High Country Lane around 9am, loaded in a scattered sort of way as we have to deliver Meals on Wheels first! Deliver communion bread to the church, then our meals (with a surprise that they are closed on Friday for meetings, so we have some frozen meals to deliver as well!) But...we are done by 10:45, gas up, mocha granita up with Backpack coupons, and we are on our way shortly after 11!

Rick drives the whole way. I get the first half of a NP camel done and entertain us both with a set of trivia cards (Sports and 50s-60s) that Rick found in the garage somewhere! Between the two of us, we scored about 50% of the time and sports was definitely better! The cards are dated 1984 so nothing current!

A half hour stop in Mount Vernon to discuss a prayer walk/labyrinth project with Mary Lou Welby for the backyard of the church. That church is struggling. A good stop and I’ll try to come up with some ideas.

Rest of drive smooth – so many areas of wildfire burns, but also gorgeous Ponderosa pine forests (east side) and Douglas fir (west side). We actually pass Jed going to volleyball as we head up the frontage road along the freeway in Salem. But no worries, we have the code to the front door and will make ourselves at home! A quick walk to stretch our legs and then a bite to eat. Reading, TV, and puzzles until Jed got home at 9:30 or so.

FRIDAY, August 15

Construction Begins!

Planting raspberry and strawberry plants, plus iris and lots of pruning for me! (After sitting in the papasan chair for two hours in the morning!) I was reminded of the need for gloves when pruning at Jed’s – thorns are everywhere! Blackberry bushes and roses mostly!

When Jed gets up he and Rick ponder the configuration of the ‘catio’ – a play space for Demos and Phobos attached to the office south window. A great deal of figuring to how to attach, size, materials (can we use some of the wood stacked on the side yard?) etc. A trip to Home Depot is in the works!

I help Rick ‘rip’ a handful of 2x6 boards that Jed has had stacked along the side of the house since he ripped off the back deck a year ago – they should work for the framework of the catio. Then while Rick spends the next hour or two sanding the boards, Jed and I head to Home Depot to pick up screws, stain and fun stuff. Also a jaunt to a grocery store for a few dinner purchases.

But alas, only an hour after Jed and I got back, work suspended as the rain began to fall! The only rain forecast for the weekend, however!

Phone call with Luke, and then I got started on our hodge podge stir fry dinner. Gotta use the veggies I brought from home, found some two year old ham in Jed’s freezer, plus a box of rice a roni dated from 2016! Put it all together with a little teriyaki sauce and it tasted pretty good!

Jed and I broke out his new game Leviathan for the evening. Took awhile to get through the instructions and then two hours to play! But a cooperative one, so always a plus in my book. And...at the last moment, we crushed all the crystals turning the bad guy monster into a good guy and won!!

Figuring things out at the office window...

How will we attach to the wood border?

In the meantime, Ginger plants the iris starts and...

...adds 10 more plants to the strawberry bed.

Rick sands...and sands...and sands.
But his rip and sand method probably saved Jed $100 worth of lumber!

SATURDAY, August 16

Catio Work!

Another lazy morning as we wait for Jed to arise (10am!) – after a quick consult with him as to dinner plans, I take off for Safeway to pick up some chicken to go along with corn on the cob and broccoli. Whip up a couple loaves of artisan bread as well. Otherwise my accomplishments for the day are to caulk the holes in the guest bath shower, and pick up the rose clippings I cut yesterday (but needed Jed’s gloves to move to the green trash can.)

Rick and Jed, however, are busy measuring, cutting, screwing the framework for the space. Jed gets to use his tools to learn to toenail screws while Rick mostly offers advice and makes cuts! By mid afternoon they are ready to return to Home Depot (in our car this time) to purchase plywood, hinges, etc. Hopefully HD will cut the plywood for them so it will fit into the car! Otherwise I think Rick was planning to take Jed’s battery circular saw and cut it in the parking lot!

I get the chicken (surprise I bought leg quarters not breasts) into a pan to bake – we were going to BBQ the breasts, but alas...oops.

Guys come back from Home Depot with plywood (cut to size!) and 2x4 inch wire fencing plus other supplies! Get to work cutting the plywood to fit around the pillars and finishing the framework.

Haven’t heard back from Liz yet re plans to get together tomorrow night.

A great chicken/corn on the cob/broccoli dinner and then another round of Leviathan – we took it to the wire, but WON! (Did the Bull one!)

The goal was to attach top and bottom to existing wood and NOT make any holes in the vinyl siding!

Jed uses the level to make sure things are straight!

Quick shot out office window as I finished up with the guest bath caulking.

SUNDAY, August 17

Catio Work and Liz visit!

I call Liz in the am and we firm up the plans for the evening. Take some time to mix up the vinegar Jed purchased yesterday and kill some weeds by the garbage cans and along the sidewalk. No sprayer so I used an old wine bottle I found in the glass recycling!

In the meantime, we are ready to stain stain stain!! Two coats are needed on everything, but we only manage to get one coat on, before realizing that we should have bought two quarts instead of one (or get the gallon as it wasn’t much more than the price of two quarts!) Jed and I went back to HD and picked up the extra quart as well as some more screws, etc. We clean up around 3:30 to be ready to meet Liz, Dave, Doug, and Tom at Don Froylon Creamery just south of Jed’s place. Dinner together and then back to the house to see what Jed has accomplished on the house, eat a little ice cream, and then play a few rounds of 5 person Spite and Malice (a very different game with that many!) Tom hadn’t played before but he caught on and won one of the rounds!

Jed heads outside after everyone leaves to use the lingering daylight to get a coat of stain on the door Rick fashioned and on the last boards he installed on the framework.

Ashamed to find I only took two pictures today and NONE of Liz and family visit!

Framework is in, ready for floor and fencing.

Time for a rest!

MONDAY, August 18

Catio is finished!

Once again I arise circa 6:30 and play on computer, etc. I do dress and head outside to get a second coat of stain on all the framework and the door. Rick begins working on the fencing material, figuring out size and how to cut to take advantage of the roll. We have plenty!! Morning then spent hammering in the fencing to the framework, while Rick begins figuring out the cat entry passage out to the catio. I pause a few times to fix some turkey soup in the crockpot for dinner (leftover from Thanksgiving 2023!) adding some of the veggies I don’t want to take home!

We are done by 3pm – the ramp to the window, the pet door installed to a sheet of wood in the window. I quickly slap a first coat of stain on the ramp and the wood panel, as well as a second coat on the inside of the door to the catio itself (the man door...you gotta stoop way down!)

Jed then leaves for an initial practice with the fall women’s VB team at Willamette. He’ll go directly to his city league volleyball matches afterwards. Rick and I relax for a bit, eat our turkey soup dinner, and then head to WinCo for a major shopping trip! But first a final visit to Home Depot for a few more supplies! We get out of Winco for under $300!! Barely!

We rearrange our groceries in the RAV – it will be a FULL CAR going home! And then head down to south part of Salem to the Community Center to watch a little volleyball. Tonight is 6 ‘man’ coed and Jed’s team is on the ‘top court’ – they win in 2, but the second game is a come from behind victory. Jed had the winning spike to win the first game and some crucial serves in the second, which they ended up winning 26-24. Fun to watch. We left after the first match as Jed’s team was due to ref for a round, and then play one more match. I was impressed with the quality of play.

Beginning the process of hammer stapling in the wire fencing.

A little harder to attach the 'ceiling' from the inside!

Moving the floor into place.

'Don't fence me in!'  Those are my feet on the inside.  My job was to put pressure against the boards while Jed hammered in the staples.

Figuring the cat door and panel to insert into the window.

The finished product - Jed will add the various shelves and 'fun' stuff on the inside.

The cat door and ramp, after I put a coat of stain on the wood.

A winning spike (photo taken off a video)

TUESDAY, August 19

Home to Baker City!

355 miles

We are up and ready to roll by 8:10am. Jed gets up to say goodbye and then heads back to bed! A quick stop for gas at the ARCO and a coffee and we take the freeway south to Hwy 22 and our route up over the Cascades!

Rick drives the first portion of the drive to Prineville. I take the time to get the other half of the camel stitched so I can put it all together when we get home! I then drive to Clyde Holiday State Park just outside of John Day. Smooth sailing all the way and only a few short stops for road work. The last hour of the drive I entertain Rick once again with our Sports Trivia questions – it doesn’t help pass the time of day!

Into Baker City to pick up our mail and then to Albertsons to grab some of the steelhead that is on special. No luck – they are out, so I get my rain check! (Later note – able to pick it up on Thursday! A good deal at 5.99 lb!)

We are home by 3:45 and quickly unload our very full car! Everything seems to have traveled just fine!

I visit the garden after unpacking and find a wealth of green beans, over 40 lemon cucumbers, just a couple squash, the tomatoes ripening, and lots of raspberries!! Plus it is time to get those beets out of the ground!

A good trip!

(and once again, no photos enroute home!)

Anthony Wildflower Walk

 Anthony Lakes Wildflower Walk

August 8, 2025

We are off for our annual anniversary 'Wildflower Walk' up at Anthony Lakes a little later than usual this year.  First, July was one busy month.  Second, the flowers were later due to heavy snows.  And third, the mosquitos are HORRIBLE in early July!

And we found flowers!!  Lots of them!  And few mosquitos!  I'll let the photos do the talking...

BANDON TRIP July 25

BANDON FAMILY GATHERING

MAC MEMORY SHARING

Friday, July 25

Baker City to Bandon

484 miles through center of state

Tom, Heather, Jen, Matt, Dani in their van, coming through Portland with multiple stops (Powell’s bookstore, etc!) Marg with us and trailer as we cross middle of state through forests and mountains!

We arrive about 6 and get set up. Jed arrives 7:45, and Taylors at 8!! Whew! The Silver Bullet (Gretch and Shawn) set up at beach house, we set up at Franklin house. Jed sleeping in Kirsty’s little trailer and Tucker in tent above. All Taylors, plus Tom and Doug inside in Franklin house. Liz and Dave at beach house. It’s a crowd!! I call Sabra only to find out that she and Mark left for Vancouver this morning and will be gone until Monday! She was so bummed and so are Liz and I!

Kirsty has made a big pot of clam chowder for everyone for whenever they arrive!

Quick view of the Sisters as we pass through Central Oregon.

Gretchen and Shawn had the Silver Bullet set up at the Franklin house but moved it to
the beach house so we could take this space.

Jed slept in the trailer part while Tucker took the tent on top!

We set up on the lot at the Franklin house (a mile from Beach house)

Heather gives little 'Franklin' a cuddle.
(So named because he was rescued on Franklin street!)

Franklin has a good cuddle inside my overalls!

Saturday, July 26

Beach walk at 7 with Taylors (no Marg), Liz and Dave, Jen and I. It is a beautiful morning, albeit a bit cloudy, and an easy walk from the Franklin house. We meet Liz and Dave, Kirsty and Erik right at the TishTang access.

Back to the beach house for eggs, cin rolls, bagels, and a smoked salmon breakfast! Yummy! Jed and Rick meet us there.

Around 10 we finally gather in the living room at the beach house with my photo roll going to share memories of Mac, laughter and a few tears. I have a couple readings from Altars Under the Sky – a book that is under considerable debate as to how I ended up with it!!

The Taylor clan then all head to OldTown – they have serious restaurants and stores to visit!

Jed and I take beach walk south. Then Rick, Jed, and I hit a few shops and Face Rock Creamery and Cranberry Sweets! Back at the Franklin house, Jed works on my laptop making a few of my requested changes.

It turns out to be a gorgeous day, but I think everyone is glad we nixed the trip up to Sunset Bay. It would have been just a lot of extra logistics and traveling.

Instead, we had the tie dye party at 4pm at the beach house! Including pouring all the extra dye on the big board Kirsty had in the side yard. It is beautiful!

We have a Hotdog dinner with all sorts of sides provided by Gretchen and Liz.

Afterwards, Tucker takes all the ‘kids’ down to the city park. There are advantages to a driver grandchild!!

Out on the deck with the cousins (except for Tom as he and Heather took a walk on the beach!) we chat and then I said I need some cousin pictures. Well, that was a fun attempt – we eventually got a few with Tom and I photoshopped Luke in!

S’mores and campfire at Franklin house. Kirsty says, “Let’s all sing campfire songs” and everyone breaks into their favorite all at once! That takes care of that! It was amazing! I wish I had put my phone on video quickly!

I brought some rather FIRM marshmallows that ended up getting thrown like rockets by the kids. Campfire ended around 10pm. Bedtime!

Jen waits for Kirsty, Erik and Kai to join us.

Jen, Tom, Heather, Matt, and Dani explore

The starfish and urchins  - gotta love low tides!

Trying to get a serious picture with these cousins was impossible!

The sun set while I was still trying for a photo!

Finally...when Tom joined us they got serious...VERY serious!

And the sun did finally set!

Campfire fun!

Sunday, July 27

I got up early and took a shower while it was available!

Breakfast at beach house – sourdough pancakes, fruit, sausage cakes and bacon. Very good! Kai and Erik went up to Unitarian Church in Coos Bay.

Liz, Marg, and I went to Bandon Presby church – guest preacher (Donna Young’s son) who spoke of the power of audacious prayer – example of Clara Brown, a freed slave who went to Denver praying all her life to be reunited with family (separated at slave auction) Two years before she died, she reunited with one of her daughters – a chance encounter with someone who noticed a clerk who looked JUST LIKE Clara at that age. Good story. Mom’s memorial stake is broken and roses need watering. Must tell Sabra.

Took family pictures of Gretchen’s gang (minus Tucker) before church as they were going to be leaving. I washed out the tie dye and got it into washing machine – Liz helped (company and holding the rubber bands!)

Good visiting time with Jed – beach walk with Jed and Rick in afternoon. Taylors went back downtown in afternoon. Liz and I reviewed my thumb drive of photos again.

Taco dinner with the 18 of us who are left. Final family photos – I have a lot of photoshopping to do to get everyone together! Should be fun!

Goodbyes to all and we head back to trailer to pack up a few things around 8 as Jed wants to get on the road. (He sends note that he is home at 11:30pm) Into bed by 10 for a 7am departure!

We were visited Sunday morning by about 7 deer and a dozen turkeys!

A picture of the remodeled front to the Beach House.

Monday, June 28

Bandon to Diamond Lake CG – Crater Lake visit

171 miles (trailer) 83 around CLNP

We are off just before 7 (with a final goodbye hug from Matt and Dani and Heather!)

Drive to Coquille and get some much needed gas to make it to the Winston/Roseburg Love’s. Beautiful morning for a drive. In fact the weather has been incredibly perfect ALL WEEKEND! Blue skies and puffy clouds at times.

Head up 138 and the North Umpqua River – through some MAJOR forest fire burn areas. So hard to see. But the river is sparkling. Into Diamond Lake around 11:15, and spend a good half hour cruising the web of campground roads to finally find a spot that isn’t reserved for tonight. Drop trailer, make payment of a whopping $8 and Off shortly after noon for Crater Lake – a must see on Rick’s list for this trip.

Mt Thielson
LONG line to enter the park, but we finally get close enough to entrance station to veer to the left and go through PASS entrance, showing our Senior Pass! The park is crawling with people and it is a MONDAY. I would hat e to see what it was like over the weekend.

Couple stops at overlook, one to eat some lunch, and then head down to take the East Rim Rd. Find it is closed for construction 5 miles in. Rats. Rick really wanted to go down to the Pinnacles, but that road is in the middle of the construction closure. Backtrack to South Visitor Information and get the park newsletter with current information. Back up the west rim road to the north and follow East Rim road about 8 miles to a good overlook of the lake. That’s enough!! The area around Cleatwood Cove was CRAZY!! Cars parked everywhere!

Panorama from west side

The clouds were amazing!

Wizard Island

The falls where we had to turn around

The lake from the east side

Butterflies in the flowers

The required 'selfie'

Back to Diamond Lake and we turn into the Resort area to scout out food possibilities We are dry camping tonight. Stay and have an early 4pm dinner! (Chicken strips Rick and BLT me) Back to trailer to clean the bugs off the truck (it was covered with squishy yellow blobs) and set up the back bed all the way.

Cooling down enough for a bike ride! There is an 11 mile bike path all the way around the lake, but we don’t plan to go that far!

We ride north on the path, which follows the roads through the campground in a rather confusing manner, and quickly find ourselves at the resort area. There, it is even harder to find the ‘trail’ because the little bike symbols marked the the road are few and far between. We finally discover the actual start to the path on the far side – indicating 11 miles back to the resort, 7 miles to the south shore facilities. We turn around! Back through resort and then head south within the campground nearly to end of camping. Check out the dump station and the shower facilities!

Back to trailer to read using the headlamps from the car. No electricity!!

Still warm in trailer but should cool down overnight.

View of Diamond Lake from dinner at the resort

I forgot to take my camera on our bike ride, but the fireweed was everywhere!

TUESDAY, July 29

Diamond Lake to Prineville (Hinkle Homestead!)

139 miles

A bit more relaxed morning as we make some coffee on the gas stove, read, and don’t rush to be on the road.

Empty the black tank at the campground dump station and are on our way shortly after 9. Just 25 miles to the town of Chemalt and some much needed gas at a very nice Pilot station. All the bugs Rick cleaned off the window last night reappear (to a bit lesser amount) as we leave Diamond Lake. Splish splash ooey gooey yellow streaks.

A smooth drive up Hwy 97 through small towns and plenty of trees on the flat plains south of Bend. I have my phone set to guide us to the Costco on the NW side of the town. We shop! And a mere $111 later we emerge! Only to head to the Costco gas station because gas there is at least 50 cents a gallon cheaper. Too bad we only needed a few gallons!

Up to Redmond then over to Prineville, arriving at Tom Hinkle’s shortly after 1pm. Spend the next 3-4 hours visiting in the air conditioning! So good to see Tom! We head out around 4:30 to find some dinner in town – ending up at Dillon’s Grill. A new place to visit! Good eats and none of us order fries (after all the fries we ate last night that was good for Rick and I!) Tom picks up the check...and later I ask if he takes all his ‘boondockers’ out for dinner! Nope, we were the first!

Back out to house for more conversation (Alaska trip!), a shower for Rick, and a chance to get connected and send a few messages for me. A stellar sunset behind Mt Jefferson.

Rick and I enjoy the AC in the trailer as we are set up outside the big barn/shop. Electricity again! Our ice chest is cooling down – our frozen purchases from Costco are in Tom’s freezer.

A beautiful sunset at Tom's

The silhouette mountain is Mt Jefferson

WEDNESDAY, July 30

Prineville to High Country Lane

208 miles

Relaxed morning, but still we are on our way around 8:30am, having forgotten to take even ONE picture of Tom! Rats!

Pick up coffee at the gas station and on our way toward home. Smooth drive. Stop in John Day for gas (just enough to make it home!) and drink, and to pull a few snacks from trailer.

Into Baker City around 12:30, stop to pick up mail, and home by 1! Good trip! Good to get trailer out for something other than Habitat build!
